What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with a romantic photo session experience? Our team has put together our top 5 tips to plan the perfect couples photo session.

1. It’s a date!

Pick a date that works for both of you. This might be before or after Valentine’s Day, but still a great way to mark the occasion. Set aside a full day or an afternoon so you’re not rushed, and you can plan some fun activities before or afterwards. Why not go out to brunch, or out for dinner and drinks afterwards? Valentine’s Day is only once a year and it’s a great excuse to celebrate! Can’t decide on a date just yet? That’s no problem. Surprise your partner with a Valentine’s Day portrait gift package to use at a later date. They’ll be touched at the thoughtful gift, and the studio team will be able to work with you to choose a date that works best for everyone.

2. Get dressed up!

How often do you get the chance to get dressed up and spend some quality time together as a couple? You might like to bring in a few outfits to show different aspects of your relationship. Wear your favourite dress or suit and come prepared to have fun! The best images are the ones that capture your genuine emotions and personality.

3. Celebrate your love story

Talk to the photographer before the photo session so that they know what makes your relationship special. Do you have any hobbies or activities that you love doing together? Maybe you want to celebrate a shared passion or the way you met? Maybe you’re complete opposites and want to showcase what makes each of you so unique. We love capturing what makes each couple unique and what better way to do that than by bringing in props like a sports team’s jersey to wear, or your favourite book series that you bonded over.

4. Surprise your partner

Bring something special or thoughtful along to the photo session to surprise them! The look of joy on their face when you surprise them with flowers or something sentimental that means a lot to the both of you will be priceless to capture. They will be touched that you have planned something so romantic to make the experience one to remember.

5. Think about your space

Picture a beautiful photo of the two of you hanging in the living room, or a gorgeous portrait box for the coffee table. Have a look at your space and see what will best suit it before coming in for your session. Renting and can’t hang anything from your walls? That’s no problem. Our range of edge to edge frames and portrait boxes are designed to suit any space – no hooks necessary. Having an idea of what best works with your space before coming in for your session will help you make the most out of your experience and you’ll walk away with some stunning pieces of artwork you will both treasure for years to come.

Every photo shoot is different. That’s because every person and pet is different. Just like our photographers are passionate about getting to know you so they can capture your personalities in your photo shoot, our designers are passionate about helping you select the perfect wall art pieces and keepsakes for your home. So how do you get the most out of your viewing with one of our design consultants after your photo shoot? Here are our top tips for helping you create the perfect wall art for your home.

Get Comfortable
Sit back, relax and get comfortable! Our team will put together your own personal slideshow to showcase the images from your photo shoot. The best part is – you don’t have to wait! The viewing takes place right after the shoot so make sure you  are able to take your time to select your new beautiful wall art. If you can we recommend organising a family member or friend to look after the kids while you’re selecting, or bring along some activities to keep them entertained.

Know Your Space
Think about the colour scheme along with the look and feel of your home to help you visualise what your ideal wall art  looks like. What location in your house would make you the happiest to see your beautiful wall art? Our founder Vittorio Natoli has a photograph of his family on his office wall that makes him smile every single time he looks at it. Our designers want to create that same experience for you. Describe the look you would love and take a couple of pictures of the room and living space to show our design consultant. Once your designer has showcased all of the beautiful images from your photo shoot they will be able to work with you to create custom designed pieces based off your ideas.

Measure Up!
This is an important one! Measure the wall you visualise your art along as well as taking some snaps of the room. We want to make sure that your new wall art fits and looks amazing in the space. Renting? No problem! Our team can work with you to create versatile lightweight wall art that can work with your current space, and can be easily transported if you do happen to move. Renovating or building? Bring along the plans so we can create the perfect wall art ready for your new or improved home once it’s completed.

Ask Questions
Your design consultant is here to help! A timeless wall art piece is an investment. They will be able to answer any questions you might have to make sure that you get the perfect piece for your home. They will also be able to help you select a payment option or plan that is right for you.

With a camera on every device and thousands of photos on our computers we assume we’re capturing every single moment of our busy lives. But do we take the time to stop, celebrate, and properly photograph milestones?  We sat down with Viva founder Vittorio Natoli to discuss the value of portrait photography and why it is more important now than ever.

What drew you to portrait photography?
Portrait photography is about expressing people’s lives, values and self-esteem. Essentially, what drew me to it was the ability to be able to tell stories about people that were meaningful to them and gave an insight into their life. It allowed me to create a lasting memory of an important point in their life.

What is the value of portrait photography in today’s world?
It’s priceless! We are leading very busy lives in a fast paced world. Portrait photography allows us to slow down, stop, celebrate, and properly value a moment in time. I would compare it to watching your first born take their first steps, watching your daughter walk down the aisle, or watching your children bond as they play. These moments may be valuable, but they can so easily be missed. This experience allows you to stop and properly value the milestone or moment.

In this day and age where we’re taking millions of photos with our phones and other devices we think that we’re well and truly covered, but when I look for the images I can’t find them. I can’t find which device they are on, I can’t find where they are downloaded, I can’t find them even when I look at Facebook. The difference between everyday images and studio photography is that we’ve made the effort to make it an important event. They are special because we’ve ensured this moment is photographed correctly, printed, framed, and easily accessible. These are the standout images that are used over and over in life. They are loved and valued for years to come.

The value of portrait photography is huge. The value sits with the participants, and with the people viewing the photographs. Photographs become more and more valuable as our life journey progresses and as we understand more about what our life is and how quickly it passes by. These images become so powerful given the fact that we’ve grown as people, as individuals and on our life journey. This is why it’s so important to value moments in time, to believe they’re valuable, and to take the time to photograph them properly so those images are there in the future.

What can people expect from a Viva experience?
The Viva experience is not just about the photo session, it’s about the people and the stories that the images tell. It is about celebrating important, valuable moments in your life.

I remember several of our customers being interviewed and saying that what made the difference between a Viva portrait and the thousands of wonderful photos they had taken themselves was that this photoshoot was deliberate. They went out of their way to come together to celebrate this milestone. They got dressed up, they looked forward to it, and they had a professional execute it for them. They then stopped and deliberated about the process. They chose a picture or pictures that they felt encapsulated that and then they went to the trouble of ordering those images and framing them. They came together for a reason to celebrate something that was valuable and left with images that they will love for years to come.

Professional photography is about validating yourself and the people that you love. It’s about creating history for yourself, your partner, your lover, your children, and future generations. The value goes on and on. It’s the gift that keeps giving. I look at an image that I took of my family that I took 30 years ago, and it easily brings me back to that moment because it’s still as good now as it was on the day I took it. It’s still valuable, it still hangs on my wall, and it still gives me great pleasure. Your memories may fade over time, but special images draw you straight back to that time and place.

Enjoy your crazy, off-the-chain, totally planned family photoshoot
Family photo shoots are full of fun and smiles, and creating conversation starters at dinner parties. However, they still need planning. You’re dealing with different personalities in a photoshoot and as much as you think there won’t be hiccups, there often are a few.

Here are a few tips to help you prepare your unit for a great day of family photography fun in the studio. It’s where you get to go crazy without judgement and love every minute of it. That’s certainly one way to sell it to the children.

Prepare the kids
Kids need to be prepared for a family photoshoot. Get them excited about the many things they can do to make it memorable. Start a few days in advance and promise (if you like) a treat after the shoot. It’s also a known fact that hungry kids are not exactly amenable to orders, and like to let you know how they feel. Nip this is in the bud by ensuring they arrive with full bellies after a good night’s rest.

Choose the right clothes
Sit down with your family and their different dress styles and decide on the type of photo shoot you would like and what you all will wear.

Maybe you want neutral but stylish clothes that add a classic and sophisticated edge to your photoshoot. Or perhaps the kids want to wear their sports gear to show off in the family portrait above the fireplace. You will need to come to an understanding of what you want to achieve and the look you want. Themes are great but they do date, and the last thing you want is an album documenting your family’s history of bad clothing choices. Take extra clothes, just to be on the safe side.

Capture the moment
Many people get stage fright and stare at the camera like it’s going to swallow them whole or pass judgement – luckily, it’ll do neither. So, everyone thinks the “cheese” line is going to make them smile, it’s not. In fact, that line is loathed by photographers across the world. Photographers don’t want to capture the moment you tell a joke, they are looking for the reactions to that joke, which is the natural element of any smile. “Cheese” is never going to achieve that natural look you are after.

Make it unique
Is there anything you and your family like to do together? Maybe you have an activity that you all enjoy; something that showcases the joy and special bond you share. Kids love hanging off Dad’s legs, maybe Dad and brother play poker and can pull off their best poker faces. There is plenty scope for fun and silliness, which you can achieve by incorporating your family activities.

Look away
Tell your family that they don’t need to stare straight into the lens; the best pictures are of their natural interactions. Remind them that this is not a regimented line up, and while some pictures may call for looking at the lens, many are taken while people are unaware.

Like anything, once people are prepared they don’t feel trapped in front of the camera. Create some common ground to settle your family so they know exactly what they’re walking into.

Welcome To The World Little One
You’re excited to meet your little one; you’ve prepared the room, chosen the clothing and selected outfits for all occasions. Of course, every mum and dad believes they will remember all those beautiful little poses and moments that their newborn babies express. And then reality sets in.

Endless nappy changes, sleepless nights and regular feeds start to blur the days, and before you know it, you’ve missed out on those first precious weeks. You want to believe that you are going to remember every single moment, but it’s over quicker than you think and those sleepless nights mean that you’ll easily forget a lot of meaningful stuff. That’s why it’s so important to capture this special time with a newborn photography session.

The first weeks
The first few weeks when your little one is sleepy and curled up are the most precious. Everything is so new; it is such a special time for any family.

To ensure you can capture those moments, photographers recommend that you have photos taken 6-10 days after giving birth. That’s a time when you have still had a decent amount of sleep and can still look at your child through clear eyes.

Those looks
You never stop looking at your newborn without an overwhelming sense of absolute love and adoration, and there’s no better way to capture this than with beautifully taken photographs.

From the moment your little one arrives life is about overwhelming expressions of all-consuming love; those sweet loving looks, cute little fingers and toes, and pure innocence are what makes your world go around. It’s these moments that you want to remember forever.

The tiny details
Those hands, rosebud lips, tiny toes, little bud nose and wisps of hair change so quickly. Many parents have said that when looking back on pictures of these tiny details they’re transported back to those moments when they can smell their little ones’ newness, and remember the feel their soft hair and skin.

Posterity
Parents are the ones who want to keep pictures of their newborns because they can never get these moments back. But there’s more to it than that. Images of your children will also become important to them as they grow up.

Every child wants to look back on their childhood pictures, and with the increase in newborn photography, more and more people get to take a step back in time and be audience to their own introductions to the world, through beautifully captured images.

Many people love to have pictures of themselves as newborns because, not only is it great, but also because it’s a wonderful thing to have when they have kids of their own. To see resemblances between themselves and their own children, is special on every level.

Create images that allow you to enjoy your children’s newborn phase, even after they’re grown and left the house. The years fly by so contact Viva Photography today because those first few weeks go by in a blink and you don’t want to miss out on capturing this amazing time in your life.
